Our Beliefs

What we believe at NBUC about Jesus, the Bible, and the Church

Our Beliefs

God is Love! (John 3:16, 1 John 4)

We believe that God loves us – always and forever! This includes the love of the cross that brings saving grace and forgiveness for all. Jesus’ unconditional love sustains us through all times and helps to foster peace and unity. As we receive this love we become empowered to love others.

Jesus is Our Way (1Corinthinans 15, 2Corinthinans 5, John 1:14)

We believe that Jesus is the greatest expression of God that we can find. He was both fully human and fully divine. In His life, death and resurrection we experience the core of the Christian life and that is where we can find our greatest hope. We believe that Jesus can transform individuals and neighbourhoods and He invites us to join Him in that process.

Presence of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-5, Micah 3:8, John 3)

We believe in the gift of the Holy Spirit as one of the most powerful promises and realities of the Christian life. Jesus gives us His Spirit that lives in us and works through us. The Holy Spirit brings healing, confidence, strength, guidance and a deep peace and assurance. As we grow in our walk with Jesus, we continue to deepen our receiving of the Holy Spirit and living into the blessing that we are not alone.

God Speaks Through Scripture (1Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:19-21)

We believe the Bible is inspired by God and that God speaks to us through these stories, words and promises. The Bible is comprised of several different genres of writing from a number of different authors. The Bible is an ancient canon of stories, poetry, and truths which continue to have meaning. As we read the Bible we find it is helpful to take into account the historical and contextual realities with which it was written. Daily reading of the Bible brings great blessing to our lives as followers of Jesus.

The Church is the Hope of the World (Acts 2:41-47; Ephesians 2:20-22)

When a community of faith is at its best, there is a sense of unity, growth and transformation. We see lives changed for the better, and positive impacts on our world. The church indeed becomes the hope of the world.

We Are All Partners With God (John 12:12-14; Ephesians 3:20-21, 1 Corinthians 12)

We believe each and every person has been given spiritual gifts and is invited to participate in what God is doing in the world. This is the great invitation, the great adventure and the great miracle - God working in and through us as we partner with Jesus to bring healing to this broken world by the power of the Holy Spirit.
